Hail Damage and Roof Claims in Dallas-Fort Worth
Spring hailstorms are a fact of life in North Texas. Knowing how your policy handles roof damage before a storm can save you thousands of dollars and a lot of stress.

Before the storm: know your policy
- Wind and hail deductible. The Texas Department of Insurance (TDI) advises asking your agent whether your wind and hail deductible is different from your other deductibles. Many are a percentage of dwelling coverage, so a 2% deductible on a $350,000 dwelling limit is $7,000.
- Replacement cost vs. actual cash value. Some policies pay roof claims at actual cash value, which subtracts for age and wear. An older roof might get a much smaller payment.
- Cosmetic damage exclusions. Some policies exclude hail damage that changes how the roof looks but doesn't let water in or stop the roof from working. These endorsements are often paired with a discount for impact-resistant roofs. Know whether you have one.
- Roof material. Impact-resistant shingles may earn a discount with some carriers. Ask before you replace your roof.
After the storm: what to do
Based on TDI's guidance:
- File a claim as soon as you can. Many policies have deadlines.
- Document everything. Take photos and video, and list the damage inside and out.
- Prevent more damage. Tarp the roof and cover broken windows. Save receipts, since your policy may pay for temporary repairs. Don't make permanent repairs before the adjuster sees the damage.
- Be there for the adjuster, ideally with your contractor.
- Keep a log of everyone you talk to at the insurance company.
Avoid storm-chaser problems
TDI recommends getting more than one estimate, checking references, never paying in full up front, and never signing a contract with blanks. Avoid any contractor who offers to waive your deductible. TDI notes that waiving a homeowners deductible is illegal in Texas, and your insurer may ask for proof that you paid it.
Your car
Comprehensive coverage on your auto policy pays for hail damage to your vehicle, minus your deductible. Liability-only policies don't.
